On-Call Service Partner (Standardized Patient)

About the role

American University of the Caribbean School of Medicine (AUC), operated by Covista, is looking for an on-call Service Partner for its Standardized Patient Program. A Standardized Patient is a healthy person trained to portray a patient in a medical situation. The role is part-time and on-call, with schedules that can vary, so flexibility is needed.

Key responsibilities

• Portray, in a clinical setting, specific emotions, behaviors and disease symptoms while interacting with medical students during standardized patient encounters.
• Memorize a case script and present the case information (history, affect/behavior, physical findings) accurately and reliably.
• Maintain the trained patient character when answering student questions.
• Be dependable and punctual, and show flexibility with scheduling and assignments.
• Interact professionally with learners, faculty, trainers and peers, and take part in group training.
• Follow written and verbal instructions, accept ongoing feedback and incorporate it into case presentations.
• Communicate effectively orally and in writing, and be willing to be audio and video recorded during sessions.
• Wear a hospital gown with only undergarments underneath while on camera or observed live through a video monitor.
• Allow students to perform physical examinations (listening to heart and lungs, abdominal and limb palpation, otoscopy, pulse and blood pressure, reflexes and gait); breast, pelvic, genital or rectal exams and invasive procedures are not performed.
• Maintain confidentiality of case information, student behavior and feedback, and comply with all policies and standards.

Required profile

• Excellent communication skills, ability to accept direction, and quick learning and memorization.
• Flexibility and reliability, and willingness to be filmed and to wear a hospital gown.
• Ability to follow directions and accept feedback.
