On-Call Service Partner (Standardized Patient)

About the role

American University of the Caribbean School of Medicine (Covista) is looking for an on-call Service Partner for its Standardized Patient Program in Philipsburg, Sint Maarten. A Standardized Patient is a healthy person trained to portray a patient in a medical situation. The role is part-time and requires acting out specific emotions, behaviors and disease symptoms during encounters with medical students.

Key responsibilities

• Portray, consistently, accurately and independently, specific emotions, behaviors and disease symptoms while interacting with medical students.
• Memorize a case script detailing emotions, behaviors and disease signs and symptoms.
• Present all aspects of the case, including history of the current problem, affect/behavior and physical findings, in a standardized and reliable way.
• Maintain the trained patient character when answering student questions.
• Be dependable and punctual, and show flexibility with scheduling and assignments.
• Interact professionally with learners, faculty, trainers and peers, and take part in group training.
• Follow written and verbal instructions, accept ongoing feedback and incorporate it into case presentations.
• Communicate effectively orally and in writing.
• Be willing to be audio and video recorded during sessions and to wear a hospital gown with only undergarments underneath while on camera or observed live.
• Accept that students may examine you (listening to heart and lungs, abdominal and limb palpation, otoscopy, pulse and blood pressure, reflexes and gait); breast, pelvic, genital or rectal exams and invasive procedures are not performed.
• Maintain confidentiality of case information, student behavior and feedback evaluations.

• Ability to role-play and act, quick learner and good memory.
• Excellent communication skills, ability to accept direction, flexibility and reliability.
• Willingness to be filmed and to wear a hospital gown with undergarments underneath.
